[Bio-linux-list] Future of Bio-Linux (BL 9 & Ubuntu 16.04) ?

Hi All,

Just to re-iterate what Tony said, I have a new job up in Edinburgh with
a lot to do and a lot to learn. There is nobody in Wallingford to
inherit the Bio-Linux project so there is no secret master plan for
going forward.

My plan is to concentrate fully on my new job for the next few months,
then think about my next steps for Bio-Linux once I've settled in the
new job. My senior colleagues here are very supportive when I have
discussed this with them. In the meantime, I'll be delighted to see any
contributions from the user community or ideas of how people want to
take things forward, and will participate as much as I can. After all,
I'm still a Bio-Linux user myself!

I've tried upgrading a Bio-Linux 7 machine to the latest Ubuntu and most
things seem to work. Having said that, most of the important packages
are already in Ubuntu anyway via Debian-Med, so you could just install
vanilla Ubuntu, enable C2D4U to get the R stuff and apt install whatever
bioinformatics packages you need. Of course, you won't get package
updates either way so you'll be stuck with the current versions of all
the tools.

The discussion seems to have turned to development details so I'll
continue on bio-linux-devel
(http://www.bioinformatics.org/mailman/listinfo/bio-linux-devel).
