From tbooth at ceh.ac.uk Tue Jan 10 13:01:13 2006 From: tbooth at ceh.ac.uk (Tim Booth) Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2006 18:01:13 +0000 Subject: [Bio-Linux] A reminder for the new year - shelf life of CD-R media Message-ID: <1136916073.10518.134.camel@ivpcp044.nox.ac.uk> Hi All, Apologies that this is not exactly news, but Computerworld is running an article today about CD media and I think it is always worth re-iterating: burned CDs do not last! Cheaper disks may only last two years, if that. http://computerworld.com/hardwaretopics/storage/story/0,10801,107607,00.html In short, if you have important data for your NERC-funded project sitting on CD then please talk to us at the NEBC sooner rather than later so we can discuss more reliable storage options. datasets at envgen.nox.ac.uk Cheers, TIM -- Tim Booth NEBC at CEH Oxford From shou at ceh.ac.uk Wed Jan 11 12:46:35 2006 From: shou at ceh.ac.uk (Stewart Houten) Date: Wed, 11 Jan 2006 17:46:35 +0000 Subject: [Bio-Linux] Updated Bio-Linux packages Message-ID: <20060111174635.GA15706@ivpcp068.nerc-oxford.ac.uk> Hello all, Just to let you know that new Bio-Linux packages are available for Act, Blast, Jalview and Taverna. If your machine is set up to perform automatic nightly updates then the new versions should be available right away. Otherwise you should ask your systems administrator to install them for you. Regards, Stewart -- Dr Stewart Houten, Bio-Linux Developer NEBC, CEH, Mansfield Road, Oxford, OX1 3SR http://nebc.nox.ac.uk/ From btiwari at ceh.ac.uk Wed Jan 18 05:27:32 2006 From: btiwari at ceh.ac.uk (Bela Tiwari) Date: Wed, 18 Jan 2006 10:27:32 +0000 Subject: [Bio-Linux] Consultation exercise for proposed CEH site closures Message-ID: Dear Bio-Linux Administrator, As many of you already know, a business plan substantially restructuring and resizing of the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) has been put forward and is currently under consultation. The NERC Environmental Bioinformatics Centre (NEBC) is based at CEH Oxford, one of the five CEH sites that this plan proposes closing down. We believe that the NEBC benefits from its central location and the facilities, for example academic facilities and links as well as strong transportation links, and we would welcome your participation in the consultation process that is currently taking place. If you wish to contribute to the consultation, further details about the plans and a link to a consultation form can be found at: http://www.nerc.ac.uk/consult/ceh/ The deadline for contributions is February 15, 2006. We are aware of a couple of newspaper articles that have been published about the proposed CEH site closures: http://news.independent.co.uk/environment/article337399.ece http://www.theherald.co.uk/features/54203.html If you happen to notice any media reports about CEH, it would be great if you could let us know. If you have any questions, please email Dawn or me. (I'm sorry for cross posting this message, but there are individuals on this list that are not on other NEBC mailing lists.) best wishes, Bela and Dawn ************************* Dr. Bela Tiwari Lead Bioinformatician NERC Environmental Bioinformatics Centre CEH Oxford Mansfield Road Oxford, OX1 3SR 01865 281975 ************************* This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
